Introductory Courses (Certificate & Diploma / Chartered Banker students only)

As part of their course registration fees, all students are entitled to attend one introductory course.

Aims of the Introductory Course

This is a one day course, delivered by CIOBS Academy staff, which:

  • Introduces students to the CIOBS
  • Facilitates networking amongst new students studying at an equivalent educational level
  • Recaps important study and learning skills
  • Outlines the distance learning scheme learning and associated procedures

Course Structure and Content

Numbers attending each course are restricted, which ensures that the tutor has the opportunity to work closely with a small group.

The course will cover a wide range of topics - these include:

  • Study Skills (including time management and note-making)
  • Personal Skills (including memory aids)
  • Student Support
  • Assignments (for Chartered-Banker based courses only)
  • Examinations.

In addition, the tutor will give students a brief overview of the CIOBS and the qualification structure. The opportunity will also be taken to fully explain the distance learning scheme and the various administrative procedures.

The introductory course is also an important opportunity for networking and affords attendees the opportunity to meet fellow students who may be facing the same challenges - this can help reduce the feeling of isolation which can occasionally affect distance learning students during their studies.

Students attending the course often have a diverse range of practical and educational experience, which has the advantage of allowing a cross-fertilisation of proven study techniques.

Introductory Courses are held in Edinburgh and a provisional programme of dates is available in the downloads section of this web site and can be viewed here. In order to ensure that the Course is a relevant as possible to each student, separate courses are available for those studying for:

  1. The Certificate or Diploma in Financial Services
  2. The Certificate in Sales & Service
  3. The Certificate in Call Centre Operations
  4. The Certificate in Credit Union Practice
  1. The Chartered Banker qualification
  2. Any bespoke Diploma based on the Chartered Banker qualification

New students studying for any of the bespoke Diploma Awards should consider attending a Chartered Banker Introductory Day.

Application is usually made on initial enrolment, via the subject enrolment form.
