INTRODUCTORY COURSES (Diploma / Chartered Banker students only)

Aim of the Introductory Course

This is a one day course which will introduce you to the distance learning scheme, with the main aims being to develop your study and learning skills and to facilitate networking amongst new students.

Course Structure and Content

The Introductory course is a one-day course, with the numbers attending each introductory course being restricted to ensure that the tutor has the opportunity to work closely with a small group. The course will cover a wide range of topics - these will include:

  • Study Skills (including time management and note-making)
  • Personal Skills (including memory aids)
  • Tutor Support
  • Assignments
  • Examinations

In addition, the tutor will give students a brief overview of the CIOBS and the qualification structure. The opportunity will also be taken to fully explain the distance learning scheme and the various administrative procedures.

The introductory course is also an important opportunity for networking and affords attendees the opportunity to meet fellow students who may be facing the same problems and difficulties - this can help reduce the feeling of isolation which can affect distance learning students during their studies. There is usually a mix of Diploma / Certificate and Associateship students on each course and this, coupled with the diverse range of practical and educational experience of attendees, also allows a cross-fertilisation of study techniques.

Introductory days are held in Edinburgh and a provisional programme of dates is is available in the downloads section of this web site and can be viewed here. As part of their course registration fees, students are entitled to attend one introductory course and applications can be made on the enrolment form.

For more details about the support offered to students please check the CIOBS Academy pages within the qualifications section.
